Crispy Chilli Potato with a sweet, spicy and tangy sauce over it along with some crispy fried onions and bell peppers. Its just such a mouth watering treat which is popularly sold in Indian. Its a very common street food snack which everyone just Loves.
Besides being sold out on the streets, Chilli Potato is also one of the most loved and ordered snack recipes in almost every Indian restaurants. There are generally two versions of Chilli Potato, one is the dry version and the other is the gravy version. I will share the recipe of both the versions below.
Crispy Chilli Potato
Chilli Potato is indeed an indo chinese starter and Indian snack recipe which is a very common Indian street food. Crispy fried Potatoes, coated in a sweet, spicy and tangy sauce this is a fusion Indian and Chinese recipe. Chili Potato is derived from its non vegetarian counterpart - Chilli Chicken and Vegetarian Counterpart - Chilli Paneer.
Just like its made on the streets, I make this Crispy Chilli Potato on the wok. First of all the Potatoes are fried until crispy and then to it diced Bell Peppers and Onions are added which are also fried just until cooked so that they retain their crunch.
And finally these are tossed together along with some flavourful sauce mixture which makes them just so delicious and indulging.

Ingredients
- Potatoes - I use fresh Potatoes which are a bit large in size as they are just perfect for this Chilli potato recipe
- Cornflour - I use cornflour to coat the chopped Potatoes
- Bell Pepper & Onions - I use a combination of red, yellow and green bell peppers and red onions which are chopped to a dice.
- Garlic - minced garlic adds flavour to this dish.
- Sauces - I use Ketchup, Green Chilli Sauce, Soy Sauce and Vinegar for this recipe
- Honey - this adds a bit of sweetness to this recipe.
How to make Crispy Chilli Potato
Step 1: Cut Potatoes and coat them
- Start the recipe by peeling the Potatoes and cutting them into thin wedges.
- Coat them with some cornstarch.
Step 2: Fry the Potatoes
- Heat Oil in a deep pot
- As the oil gets piping hot, add the Potatoes and fry over high heat for 5-10 minutes or until get get crispy and golden brown
- Once the Potatoes gets golden brown, remove them from the heat.
- Remove the oil from and keep it aside.
Step 3: Make the Sauce
- In the same wok add some chopped garlic and chopped bell peppers and onions
- Stir fry on high heat for 5 minutes
- Add Ketchup, Soy Sauce, Green Chilli Sauce, Vinegar, Salt and Pepper to it
- Stir well everything.
Step 4: Serve
- Add the crispy fried Potatoes to the sauce
- Toss to combine everything
- Garnish with Spring Onions and Sesame Seeds and serve.
Tips to make the best Crispy Chilli Potato
- To make the best crispy chilli potato, soak the potatoes in water for 30 minutes and then boil them for 3-4 minutes
- If you parboil the potatoes and then use them, they will get extra crispy
- If you want to avoid deep fried Potatoes, you can use an air fryer to fry the Potatoes. Cook them @350F or 180C for 10 minutes or until crispy.
Crispy Chilli Potato
Ingredients
- 4 medium sized Potatoes
- 2 tbsp Cornstarch
- 1 medium sized Green Bell Pepper diced
- 1 medium sized Red Bell Pepper diced
- 1 medium sized Yellow Bell Pepper diced
- 2 cups Oil for deep frying
- 3 cloves Garlic minced
- 1 medium sized Onion diced
- ½ tsp Vinegar
- 1 tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 tbsp Green Chilli Sauce
- 2 tbsp Ketchup
Instructions
- Peel the potatoes and slice them into halves. Cut them into strips. Soak them into water for 30 minutes.
- Coat the potatoes with cornstarch.
- Heat oil in a wok and once the oil is smoking hot, add the Potatoes and fry until they get crispy.
- Once the potatoes are golden brown and crispy, remove them and keep aside. Keep the leftover oil aside.
- In the same pan, add a tablespoon of leftover oil. Add the minced garlic and fry for 30 seconds.
- Add the chopped Bell Peppers and Onions and saute over high heat for 2-3 minutes.
- Add the vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce and chilli sauce. Toss to combine everything. Add the Potatoes and combine everything well.
- Serve hot. Garnish with chopped spring onions or toasted sesame seeds.
